Kris Kristofferson, the iconic US country singer and actor, has passed away at the age of 88.
Kristofferson’s family confirmed the demise in a statement on Sunday, though the cause of death was not disclosed.
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband, father, and grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28, at home,” the statement reads.
“We are all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”
Since the announcement of Kristofferson’s death, tributes have poured from all corners of the entertainment world.
Barbra Streisand, his co-star in ‘A Star Is Born’, revealed on Instagram how “charming as ever” Kristofferson was when they performed together in London’s Hyde Park in 2019.
Dolly Parton, the US singer, also honoured him on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “He was a great writer, a great actor, and a great friend. I will always love you”.
Born June 22, 1936, Kristofferson’s songwriting career made him a staple in country music, with hits like ‘For the Good Times’, ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’, and ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’.
His first four albums, released under Monument Records, all charted in the top 10 of the country charts.
He won three Grammy Awards, including one for Best Country Song (Help Me Make It Through the Night) and two duet wins with Rita Coolidge, his ex-wife.
