Burna Boy, the Afro-fusion singer, says Virgil Abloh, the late fashion designer, was supposed to be the creative director for ‘Love, Damini’, his last album.
Abloh died of cancer in November 2021, months before the release of Burna Boy’s album, ‘Love, Damini’.
In a recent interview, Burna Boy said that he had been working with Abloh on his previous album.
The singer added that the designer was involved in shaping the artistic direction and concept of the album.
“He was supposed to be the creative director for the last album,” Burna Boy said.
“That is why the skit you are hearing of Virgil speaking, that is him, me and Ronnie speaking of the creative direction of the last album like how it was supposed to be.”
Burna Boy also described Abloh as “a great designer” and an inspiration to the black community.
He said Abloh’s work opened up new possibilities for black artistes in the fashion world.
“It is like that does something to us coming from where we are coming from,” he added.
“For me, that just opened the floodgates for us in the fashion world.
“That is why I do not really play about his name.”
In July, Burna Boy paid tribute to Abloh in ‘Big 7’, one of the tracks of ‘I Told Them’, his latest album.
The singer gained fame after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’.
In 2021, Burna Boy set a record after his fifth album ‘Twice As Tall’ won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards.
