In June, the Recording Academy, organiser of the Grammys, included the ‘Best African Music Performance’ category for the 2024 edition.

The award organiser said the category will feature 19 music genres across Africa including ‘Afrobeats’, ‘Amapiano’, ‘High Life’, ‘Fuji’, and ‘Afro-Fusion’.

This makes it the first time in the history of the awards that a category will be specifically dedicated to African music.

During a recent interview with Los Angeles Times, Burna Boy said he feels responsible for the newly added category.

The 32-year-old music star said he is waiting to see if the category will “hold as much prestige” as the others.

“I do feel somewhat responsible for the new category which is nice,” he said.

“At the same time, what is it really? Is it a consolation category? Will it hold as much prestige? I am waiting to see.

“I do not know how I stay grounded, to be honest. I cannot really tell you everything that brings me happiness. All I know is what I am sure about and I am sure music is life for me. I have to deliver.”

Born Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy gained prominence after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013).

In 2021, the singer set a record in Nigeria after his fifth album ‘Twice As Tall’ won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards.

He was also announced as the first African artiste to hit one billion Audiomack streams.
