Funke Akindele, Nollywood actress, and Abdulrasheed Bello, her husband, have been sentenced to 14-day community service each.
A magistrate court sitting in Lagos on Monday handed the sentence after they pleaded guilty for violating the lockdown directives imposed by the Lagos state government to halt the spread of COVID-19.
The lovebirds were also directed to pay the sum of N100,000 each as fine, be placed in self-isolation for 14 days and submit the contacts of all persons who attended the birthday party.
The movie star was arrested on Sunday, after she staged a house party, flouting the social distance measures put in place to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
The one-count charge against the couple reads: “That you (1) Funke Akindele (2) Abdul Rasheed Bello on the 4th day of April, 2020 at 9, Gbadamosi Close, Amen Estate, Ibeju Lekki in the Lagos Magisterial District gathered at the aforementioned address with over twenty persons contrary to the social distancing directives of Mr Governor of Lagos State made pursuant to Regulation 8(29)(a) & (b) and 17(1)(i) of the Lagos State Infectious Disease (Emergency Prevention) Regulation 2020 and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 58 Public Health Law Cap P16 Vol 9 Laws of Lagos State, 2015.”
President Muhammadu Buhari had also imposed a two-week lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and Abuja, in order to halt the spread of the virus.
Nigeria has recorded 232 cases of coronavirus so far, with five deaths and 33 people discharged.
