Bad Boy Timz has threatened to institute a N900 million suit against Anonymous Music, his former record label.
The singer, real name Timilehin Olorunyomi, has accused the company of defamation and “exposing him to public contempt”.
He asked the label to apologise for defaming his brand and pay N200 million as damages for publishing an offensive video.
The video in question had shown the 21-year-old Headies awards winner getting handcuffed and arrested by police officers.
On May 22, Anonymous Music released a statement in which it accused the artist of “defrauding the label and other parties”.
The label also alleged that the artist and Jerry Adibe, his manager, have been involved in the diversion of funds.
In reaction, the ‘Hustle’ singer took to his Twitter page to debunk the allegations which he says are false.
“My attention has been drawn to the press release dated 22nd of May 2021 by Bad Boy Anonymous Music Ltd (also known as Anonymous Music) posted on various social media, suggesting the existence of an artist performance and recording agreement as at today between myself and Anonymous Music for the avoidance of doubt, the said contract has since been terminated,” he wrote.
“I exercised my right to terminate the contract after due notice of breach of contract by the music label as required under the contract and in accordance with law.
“The contract in the presence release issued by the music label is false and deliberately made to distort facts surrounding the termination of the contract with the music label.”
In another statement signed by Segun Ojo, the artist’s lawyer, he accused the label of instructing the “deliberate recording of our client’s humiliation”.
The statement also said he was dehumanised and subjected to public ridicule.
“Regrettably you instructed the deliberate recording of our client’s humiliation in the hands of the police officers and posted the offensive video and exposed him to public contempt,” the statement read.
“This libellous video showed how our client was handcuffed and paraded in a place that looks like the federal secretariat, Abuja for passers-by and the likes to see the dehumanising treatment our client was been subjected.
“We therefore write to demand that you take the following steps within 7days from the receipt of this letter.
“A letter from the company jointly signed by Messrs. Temple Egemasi and Precious Egemasi to our client containing a suitable apology for the publication of the offensive video.
“The said letter to be published in three different national newspapers. Payment of the sum of N200, 000, 000 (Two hundred million naira) as damages for publication of the offensive video.
“An undertaking both from the company and Messrs. Temple Egemasi and Precious Egemasi that will desist from publicising such offensive video and/or any future allegation or action capable of deforming the character of our client.”
The statement also said that failure to adhere to the demands of the artiste will warrant a libel suit “estimated at about N900,000,000”.
