In the bustling streets of Nigeria, where hardship often overshadows hope, one man is rewriting the narrative—Oluwaseun Akinyemi Omotayo, better known as Asherkine. To some, he’s just a content creator; to others, he’s a beacon of change. His name has become synonymous with unexpected acts of kindness, bringing joy to those who need it most. But who is the man behind the viral moments?

WHO IS ASHERKINE?

Born on May 8, 1998, in Lagos, Asherkine grew up in the city often called the ‘Center of Excellence’. A graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), he prefers to keep his family life private, letting his work speak for itself.

FROM SKITS TO SOCIAL IMPACT

Asherkine began his career as a content creator around 2017–2018, while still a student at UNILAG. His early content featured relatable skits and pranks, but his passion for filmmaking and cinematography soon led him to explore vlogging. He collaborated with fellow creators in the HypeSquad collective, a group that included Virtuosi, Twyse, and Simisanya.

However, his content took a transformative turn in 2019 after he was inspired by emotional acts of kindness videos online. Shifting from comedy to philanthropy, he began documenting his random acts of generosity —helping street vendors, students, elderly citizens, and everyday Nigerians struggling to make ends meet.

THE RISE OF ‘STREET SANTA’

Asherkine started filming his goodwill gestures across Lagos and sharing them on Instagram and TikTok. By 2021, his videos went viral, captivating audiences with raw, emotional reactions from those he helped.

As his following grew, so did his impact. Brands and sponsors took notice, allowing him to expand his charitable efforts.

His giveaways now include:

  • Monetary gifts
  • Full grocery shopping sprees
  • Surprise rent payments
  • Business support for entrepreneurs
  • Student scholarships
  • Medical bill assistance

One of his most touching moments was when he encountered a father carrying a sick child at the CMS bus stop in Lagos. After hearing the man’s struggles, Asherkine gave him N250,000 and promised to assist with hospital arrangements.

In September 2024, he made headlines again after donating a borehole facility to the Amper community in Kanke LGA, Jos Plateau state, where residents had relied on just three wells for nearly 30 years. During the same trip, he provided school supplies, scholarships, and food items to the neighboring Kwaikong community.

His consistent kindness has earned him nicknames like ‘Street Santa’ and ‘Nigeria’s Mr. Beast’. No longer confined to Lagos, his missions now extend to states like Enugu, Bayelsa, Oyo, Benin, and even beyond Nigeria to Ghana.

FACING CRITICISMS

Despite his goodwill, Asherkine has faced backlash on social media. Some critics argue that he helps women more than men, claiming that his assistance to men is less substantial. Yet, these criticisms haven’t slowed him down.

For every skeptic, there are countless lives he’s touched, proving that in a world often clouded by struggle, a single act of kindness can spark hope. Asherkine isn’t just creating content; he’s creating change, one selfless deed at a time.
