A video of a crossdresser being harassed and stripped in Abuja has surfaced on social media.

The footage, which has since gone viral, shows a group of people confronting the crossdresser in a public space at night over his choice of outfit.

In the video, the crossdresser attempts to walk away as the crowd follows him, hurling derogatory comments and making aggressive gestures.

The middle aged man was stripped off in public before he was allowed to go with a warning not to wear such an outfit again.

The incident comes in light of the recent death of another Abuja crossdresser, known as Area Mama.

The crossdresser was found dead along the Katampe-Mabushi expressway in August.

Area Mama’s body was discovered in a pool of blood, with visible scratches and bruises, and his belongings scattered nearby.

Another video captured Area Mama shortly before his tragic demise, also clad in a similar outfit.

Following his demise, James Brown, the popular crossdresser, expressed concern for the safety of his peers.

He urged fellow crossdressers to reconsider wearing outfits associated with the opposite sex in public, adding that there are potential risks involved.

“He is dead already. All I know is that most of you who are dressing as a woman, standing on the road, your life is at risk,” he wrote.

“I have never dressed like a woman and stood on the road my entire life. It has never been my caution.”

In April 2022, the house of representatives considered a bill seeking to prohibit crossdressing in Nigeria.

The bill aims to amend the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act (SSMPA) and defines crossdressing as the “practice of wearing clothes usually worn by a person of the opposite sex”.

The proposed amendment, however, provided an exception that the clauses “shall not apply to crossdressing in the course of a stage play or in any bona fide public entertainment”.

When passed into law, crossdressers may face up to six months in jail if they continue with their current practice.

Bobrisky had in 2020 revealed that she opted for crossdressing to make ends meet after 25 years of being a man.

In September 2021, the social media celebrity also talked about some of the perks she enjoys being a “woman”.
