Alan Arkin, the US actor who won an Oscar award for his performance in ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, has died at the age of 89.
The actor passed away on Friday at his home in Carlsbad, California.
Arkin’s demise was confirmed by his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony in a family statement.
“Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man,” the statement reads.
“A loving husband, father, grand and great-grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”
The statement, however, did not disclose the cause of his death.
Born on March 26, 1934, in Brooklyn to Russian-German Jewish immigrant parents, his family moved to Los Angeles when he was a child.
While growing up, Arkin formed the music group — The Tarriers — in which he sang and played guitar. The group didn’t stay together long but they produced a hit with ‘The Banana Boat Song’ in 1956.
Four years later, Arkin became an early member of the Second City improvisational troupe in Chicago.
He gained fame in 1966 after featuring in ‘The Russians Are Coming’.
Over the course of his blistering career, Arkin won a plethora of awards.
He was named best supporting actor for his role in ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ at the 2007 Oscars.
The New York-born and Los Angeles-raised actor won a Golden Globe award and also secured a Tony Award for best actor following his role in the 1963 play titled ‘Enter Laughing’.
Most recently, Arkin was nominated for Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG awards for his role in the Netflix series ‘The Kominsky Method’.
Tributes have continued to pour in for Arkins as news of his death spreads.

“A world without Alan Arkin is …not so great. I’ve loved this man from the moment he came on screen in “The Russians Are Coming..” (“Whitaker Walt!!) I was 8,” Paul Reiser, Arkin’s colleague, wrote.
