Samuel Ajibola: Our leaders focus not right… Twitter isn’t our problem

Samuel Ajibola, Nigerian actor, says the “focus of our leaders is not right” with respect to the ban placed on Twitter, the US social networking service.

On June 4, the government of President Muhammadu Buhari had banned Twitter, citing “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

But in an interview with TheCable Lifestyle on Tuesday — about a month since the sanction — the 33-year-old award-winning film star actor said the decision to ban Twitter shows that the current administration has misplaced its priorities.

Ajibola, who is popular for his role as ‘Spiff’ in ‘The Johnsons’, a prominent television series, also stressed that there are more pertinent issues like insecurity and unemployment that the government should find lasting solutions to rather than Twitter.

“It is sad that the focus of our leadership is not in the right place,” he said.

“Twitter is not our problem because we have major problems.  We have unemployment, poverty, and insecurity. Twitter is not our problem.”

The film star had started his acting career when he starred in ‘Tears for Love’ in 1995. He later featured as a child actor in other films including ‘Without Love’, ‘Shame’, ‘Eye-witness, ‘Onome II’, ‘Conspiracy’, ‘Street Kids’ and ‘Day of Reckoning’.

In 2003, he took a hiatus from acting to finish his high school education and pursue a degree in Political Science at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), after which he underwent his National Youth Service Programme (NYSC).

Earlier this year, the seasoned comedian announced that he will be quitting his role as ‘Spiff’ in ‘The Johnsons’,

Ajibola also noted that it was time for him to move on from the series and take up new tasks in the entertainment landscape.
