Irrfan Khan, an Indian actor renowned for his role in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, a 2008 British crime drama film, has died aged 53.
The Bollywood-Hollywood star breathed his last on Wednesday after he was admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital with a colon infection.
“It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him,” read a statement from his PR agency.
“Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for heaven abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said ‘As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it’.”
Khan’s death is coming two years after he was diagnosed with a rare neuroendocrine cancer and underwent months of treatment in the United Kingdom.
The movie star was said to have died days after Saeeda Begum, his 95-year-old mother, passed away on Saturday morning in Jaipur.
Aside from ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, the father of two, had also taken up roles in other renowned movies including ‘Life Of Pi’, bridging the gap between Hollywood and South Asian cinema.
Khan’s career spanned over 30 years and earned him numerous accolades, including a National Film Award, an Asian Film Award, and four Filmfare Awards.
