A slew of photos showing a Nigerian trader retrieving his sugarcane sticks from the culvert is now making the rounds on social media.
In a flurry of comments on Twitter, Nigerians took to their handles on Monday to register their outrage on the development.
While some users decried the development, calling Nigerians to subject such foods to scrutiny before purchase, others blamed the government for policy and institutional inadequacies.
“The photo speaks volumes of situations bothering on policies and institutions, governance, and poor water management. Here’s a sugarcane seller using wastewater to wash his products Human rights to water must be addressed,” a user wrote.
Speaking on food hygiene, another registered: “May God forgive our sins towards humanity. Health alert: please buy only unpeeled sugarcane if you are unsure of the hygiene.”
Below is what Nigerians had to say.
