Duncan mighty is arguably the most sought-after artiste on the Nigerian music scene at the moment but his journey, success and relevance date back many years before ‘Fake Love’.
Born Duncan Wene Mighty Okechukwu in Port Harcourt, the singer-producer like many of his peers began his musical journey in a church choir.
As a boy in the choir, Mighty learned to play a number of instruments including drums.
His passion for music led him to study audio engineering to further develop his skills, focusing more on music production.
In 2008, Mighty released his first studio album titled ‘Koliwater’ which features standout songs like ‘Ijeoma’ and ‘Scatter My Dada’.
Three years later, the Port Harcourt-based music gem released ‘Obianuju’, one of his most memorable songs, off his ‘Ahamefuna (Legacy)’ album.
The 34-year-old singer continued to create and release records including albums like ‘Footprints’ (2012), ‘Grace & Talent’ (2014), and ‘The Certificate’ (2016).
His previous collaborative efforts include songs with Phyno, Timaya, Shaggy, Wande Coal, among others.
Circa 2016, Mighty went off the mainstream scene but continued to pursue an active career in Port Harcourt.
Then in May 2018, it all changed when he collaborated with Wizkid on ‘Fake Love’. His delivery was so stainless that it endeared him anew to music artistes and music lovers.
‘Fake Love’ continues to enjoy commercial success as it is one of the most played songs on radio and streaming platforms in Nigeria.
The success of the song catapulted him back into the limelight causing an ever-increasing demand for a Mighty feature.
Since then, he has collaborated with Tiwa Savage on ‘Lova Lova’, Flavour and Masterkraft on ‘Low Waist’, Reekado Banks on ‘Bio Bio’, B-Red on ‘Uju’ (remix), and Bracket on ‘Chinelo’, among many others.
Duncan Mighty’s sound has always been unique and the seeming hiatus he took from the mainstream was enough for listeners to miss it.
His infectious melody, witty lines mixed with the present day Afrobeats vibe is a perfect blend and may be the reason why listeners are drawn to him.
Now, many artistes are after a feature to give their song a ‘Mighty’ boost.
Davido, who has also collaborated with him, recently paid the singer a visit in Port Harcourt for a video shoot helmed by Clarence Peters.
Amidst the frenetic spate of collaborations since his resurgence, Mighty feels justified that his decision to remain in Port Harcourt and endure being called “local”, even while at the peak of his success, is starting to pay off.
According to the singer, his soon-to-be-released collaboration with Davido is historic.
He described the song as a “music project that will open up the entire Niger Delta region and set the pace for an unprecedented growth of the entertainment industry”.
Mighty even went as far as asserting that the project “will be the biggest non-oil investment” in the region.
Port Harcourt’s first son, it appears, is back with a vengeance and is only just getting started.
