The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had on Monday quizzed the Abuja-based business mogul for alleged money laundering and tax fraud.

The development has continued to elicit several reactions, with a huge number of Nigerians sharing contrasting views on social media.

A few hours after Cubana’s detention circulated on social media, several Nigerians — including celebrities — began to demand his release the EFCC custody with the hashtags #FreeObiCubana and #ManOfTheYear.

2Baba took to his Instagram page to share a picture of the socialite with a terse note which reads “Fishing expedition #freeobicubana.”

On his part, Peter Okoye wrote “Man of the year #FreeObiCubana” on his Twitter page.

Similarly, Franklin wrote via his Instagram page: “We outside @obi_cubana #Manoftheyear.”

Cubana Chief Priest had earlier also used the hashtag while alleging that his detention was another evidence of attempts to clamp down on people from the southeast.

“What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. We Igbos are used to this, Mbakala ga ama ozo mana ozo ga ala. #FreeObiCubana,” he had written.

Abba Bichi, son of Yusuf Bichi, the director-general (DG) of the Department of State Services (DSS), had also described Cubana as “a man of dignity”.

Obi Cubana, whose real name is Obinna Iyiegbu, became a viral sensation after he buried his mother, who died in December last year, in grand style.
