In a recent interview clip shared by Complex, the 23-year-old music star opened up on how she recorded ‘Gimme Dat’, her hit collaboration with Wizkid in April.

Starr revealed that the track’s journey to release was unconventional.

She said she had initially co-directed and shot a music video for the song months in advance but ultimately found herself dissatisfied with the result.

The singer said she sent the track to Wizkid for a feature. She added that the ‘Ojuelegba’ hitmaker responded with immediate enthusiasm, recording his verse within just three days.

“We had shot the video like four months before. I co-directed and creative directed and I did not like it. I liked it but I did not like it and I said let us send it to Wizkid. And we sent it to Wizkid and he recorded the song in like three days,” she said.

“He was like ‘I love the song. I am going to do it of course, I got you’.”

The ‘Bloody Samaritan’ singer said Wizkid was the only artiste who could truly complement the song’s vibe.

She added that the track’s sonic texture and chorus pattern felt intrinsically aligned with his style.

“Nobody else would have been right on that song asides from Wizkid. Even just his sonics and the sound, the chorus pattern feels very Wizkid. It feels very like sexy Afrobeats and everybody knows that Wizkid is the king of sexy Afrobeats,” she declared.

Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, Starr became a viral sensation after releasing her hit track ‘Bloody Samaritan’ in 2021.
