Wizkid, the Afrobeats singer, has finally congratulated Angelique Kidjo, the Beninese singer, for her win at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
On Sunday, Wizkid lost the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category to Kidjo. The ‘Ojuelegba’ crooner was also unable to claim the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ category, which was won by Arooj Aftab, the Pakistani vocalist.
The singer’s Grammy loss had sparked a wave of criticism among his fans on social media with some celebrities also calling out the Recording Academy.
Wale, the Nigerian-American rapper, had said that ‘Essence‘, Wizkid’s hit single with Tems, should have won “multiple awards” at the Grammys.
Naomi Campbell, the British actress cum model, had also lashed out at the organisers of the Grammy Awards, claiming the ‘Made In Lagos’ album and ‘Essence’ were placed in the wrong categories.
She had also accused the Grammys of being “tone-deaf”, claiming they always find new ways to misrepresent and neglect the categorization of Afrobeats
But about 48 hours after the Grammys, Wizkid took to his Instagram Stories to congratulate Kidjo and Black Coffee for their wins at the award ceremony.
“Love to my brother a true King Black Coffee and Queen Angelique Kidjo for consistently shining light to the continent. African music rising,” he wrote.
