Kingdom Kroseide was on Sunday crowned winner of the sixth edition of Nigerian Idol, the local version of the Idol series franchise, a reality television singing competition.
Kingdom had made it to the top two last week alongside Francis Atela, after the eviction of Akunna Okechukwu.
On the night he won the Nigerian Idol, the emerging vocalist had an august performance of ‘One Hit’ with Cobham Asuquo, Nigerian producer and songwriter.
Kingdom also gave an energetic rendition of ‘Gentleman’, a song by Fela, the late Afrobeat legend, before he then closed the night with his own version of ‘Iyawo Mi’, a hit single by Timi Dakolo, Nigerian singer.
His emergence as the show’s winner had come on the backdrop of his blistering performances of several hit songs.
For instance, he cemented his name in the show’s top two after performing ‘Say Something’, a song by A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera, ‘Just the Way You Are’ by Bruno Mars, and ‘Lion’s Sleep Tonight’, by Lebo M, South African composer.
He also made the top three after an impressive rendition of ‘Iyawo Mi’ by Dakolo, and a soulful cover of ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ by Bee Gees, the British music trio.
Similarly, Kingdom etched his name in the top four after he dazzled the audience and the judges with a historic performance of ‘Holy Spirit’, a song by Majek Fashek, as well as James Brown’s ‘It is a Man’s Man’s Man’s World’.
On his way to clinching the top 5, he impressively took control of both sections of the night as he delivered Bruno Mars’ ‘Just the Way You Are’ in the pop section and a heartfelt rendition of Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’ for the Jazz genre.
During the 11th episode, a night the contestants paid tributes to Kuti, the late Afrobeat singer, Kingdom thrilled the audience with the delivery of ‘Gentleman’.
He went mainstream with the careful performance of ‘Uyo Meyo’, a song by Teni The Entertainer, Nigerian singer, to join the top 9 contestants.
The gifted vocalist eventually emerged victorious after beating 10 other contestants to clinch the prize.
According to the organizers, the winner will walk away with a recording deal of a six-track EP, 3 music video shoots, N30 million cash prize, and a brand new SUV.
