The 69-year-old Hollywood star was baptised during service on Sunday. In now-viral footage, the actor was submerged in baptismal water with three ministers surrounding him.

At the end of the ceremony, the movie star posed with his minister’s license and certificate of baptism, wearing a grey T-shirt and black trousers.

During the ceremony, Washington shared a story about a prophetic word spoken over him 50 years ago by a relative.

He said the relative had prophesied that he would “become a preacher of the gospel to the world”.

“Man gives award. God gives reward. That is what my mother told me about eight to nine times I lost the Acadeaward. Miss Green said ‘Boy, you are going to travel the world and preach to millions of people’. She did not talk about school or win an Academy Award. She could not even spell the word prophecy,” Washington said.

The actor, who turns 70 on December 28, also thanked his wife Pauletta Washington, after the baptism.

“If He could do this for me, He can do it for you. I am thankful for all God has given me in 70 years — a loving faithful wife. Anything I can do I will do for this church. I just want to be at that number when the Saints march on,” he continued.

Denzel and Pauletta married on June 25, 1983. They have four children together.
