Veekee James, the fashion celebrity, has opened up about a devastating period of online criticism following her marriage to Femi Atere, revealing that claims she “stole” her husband from a friend nearly led her to depression.

James, who announced her marriage in October 2023 and held lavish traditional and white weddings in Akwa Ibom and Lagos in 2024, shared her emotional ordeal on the Nancy Isime show.

The entrepreneur recounted how malicious trolls spread the fabricated story that her now-husband was previously in a relationship with one of her friends and that the couple was sexually involved before marriage.

She said in her despair, she turned to her faith. She also described her emergence from that dark period as nothing short of a “miracle”.

She stated that since overcoming that situation, negative comments no longer affect her.

“There was one that really shook me. That was the period we had to ask God to help us come out of it. And immediately we came out of that, that was the end,” she said.

“I think it was a story of how I stole him from a friend. And we were sleeping with each other. And so many of them are lies. It almost put me in depression. For the first time in my life, I got to understand what people who face depression feel.

“I remember entering my room, and I did not come out for like two days. I was there crying and praying. And I told God, you know the stories. If you know that what they are saying is all lies, help us get through this without it ruining my brand.

“I remember waiting on God for days. And the way he brought me out was like a miracle. I have heard different stories, and it was just so easy for me to laugh about it. I remember my brother advising that I should not read comment,s but I read them to know why I am trending. To know which places I am doing too much.

“I ask God to help me and guide. To be honest, I do not plan to make a video with my kid where we are dancing and I am trying to hide them. I plan to have kids who would be role models in society.”
