Two students of Gateway Polytechnic in Ode-Remo, Ogun state, have reportedly died in what is suspected to be a case of food poisoning.
A source at the institution, who spoke with TheCable Lifestyle on Tuesday, said the students ate spaghetti at night and died the next morning.
“I learnt that they ate the spaghetti at night and by the next morning, three among them died. They were five in total but two survived,” she said.
It is understood that the two students died alongside an admission seeker who also ate out of the food.
They were said to have developed stomach pains a few hours after taking the food.
Their bodies were reportedly discovered on July 12.
The actual cause of their death remains unclear as of the time of this report.
Following the incident, the institution rescheduled its second-semester exam initially billed to hold on July 17.
In a statement, Adebayo Folorunso, the school’s spokesperson, said the exam will now commence on July 19.
Folorunso also called on the students to remain calm amid the situation and assured them that the institution’s management would ensure justice in the case.
“The academic board of Gateway (ICT) Polytechnic, Saapade, has rescheduled Wednesday, July 19th as the new examination date for the second semester 2022/2023 academic session to commiserate the loss of our students to an unfortunate incident,” the statement reads.
“While the management sympathizes with the student union government for the loss, we appeal to the entire student populace to remain calm and peaceful noting that the management is abreast of the situation.
“Equally, we also condole with the parents of the deceased on the loss of their wards, praying that God will give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
When contacted, Omolola Odutola, the state police spokesperson, asked for the division covering the location of the school and promised to revert.
However, she is yet to respond as of the time of this report.
