TheCable Lifestyle had reported how an angry mob pounced on the 500-level student of Civil Engineering at the institution for alleged phone theft.

The student was later taken to the OAU Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife where he was confirmed dead.

In a statement on Wednesday, Yemisi Opalola, the command’s spokesperson, said there is “an ongoing discreet investigation” into the matter.

Opalola said the command was saddened by “unwarranted action” and warned the students to desist from taking laws into their hands.

It is understood that the arrested suspects are executives of Awo Hall, where the late student was attacked.

Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution’s public relations officer, also confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

He said the suspects should have adhered to the constitutional provisions and the university’s regulations rather than taking the law into their hands.

Olarewaju added that the university had set up a committee to unravel the circumstances leading to the murder of the student.

Meanwhile, Okoli’s death has continued to elicit widespread outrage.

On Wednesday, students of the institution staged a protest to demand justice for their late colleague.
