Twitter, microblogging giant, has announced it would start marking out manipulative content as from March 5, to curb spread of false information.

The microblogging platform disclosed this in a blog post on Tuesday, adding that the move followed findings from its recent survey — which cuts across over 6,500 different people around the world.

According to the social media platform, the survey was further corroborated by consultations with “diverse global group of civil society and academic experts on our draft approach.”

It explained findings from its research showed “overall, people recognize the threat that misleading altered media poses and want Twitter to do something about it.”

“We know that some Tweets include manipulated photos or videos that can cause people harm. Today we’re introducing a new rule and a label that will address this and give people more context around these Tweets,” it wrote.

The tweet was followed by the company’s new rule include flagging posts, photos and audios considered to be doctored.

“You may not deceptively share synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm. In addition, we may label Tweets containing synthetic and manipulated media to help people understand the media’s authenticity and to provide additional context,” Twitter added.

This continues the ongoing reforms being trawled by the platform to checkmate spread of false information.

Jack Dorsey, the microblogging platform’s CEO, had last year announced global ban on political adverts, noting they portend “risks to politics.”

The development comes about the same time Facebook announced it would start removing false contents aimed at misinforming people about the spread of coronavirus.
