In the two-minute footage that has gone viral on Twitter, the officer can be seen signalling the biker to a halt after which he proceeded to quiz him on where he was coming from. He then urged the biker to give him money.

The policeman said: “What did you bring for us? Don’t tell me that […that you don’t have anything].”

He insisted on extracting money from him, even if it means receiving it in a foreign currency.

In his response, the Spaniard who shot the video said: “I’m coming from Spain; I crossed to Nigeria today. I don’t have anything yet. I didn’t change some money. When I get to Lagos, I’ll withdraw money with my credit card.

“I don’t have cash. I’m coming from Benin. My family is in Spain. I just transit. I go to Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, all the way to South Africa. I transit along Africa. I do informatics, computer. I deal with computers. I have to go.”

As the video made the rounds on social media, the police’s public complaints unit took to its Twitter page to say: “This video was earlier intercepted via other SM platform and investigation already initiated, please.

Your complaint is hereby acknowledged and investigation has been initiated. Your tracking number is #CRU317150, Thank you for contacting NPF-CRU.”

The development has since prompted conversation and elicited mixed reactions on Twitter.

“Nobody wishes to join the police force, especially the other rank cadre. Hence, the force ends up recruiting people who saw the police job as their LAST bus stop. So we need to reengineer the recruitment process,” one person wrote.

“Second, their pay needs to be reviewed, plus disciplinary measures strengthened and better enforced. Following these steps, we can start looking forward to a better police force. But for now. It is the wild west!”

Another Twitter user added: “It’s so simple to investigate videos like this & instantly dismiss all the police at the checkpoint. Then put a new team there & train them with the warning, you mess up, you are fired.

“But then again these guys deliver to whoever put them there so the rot is all the way to the top.”
