A Nigerian policeman has been caught on tape begging a Spanish biker for money.
In the two-minute footage that has gone viral on Twitter, the officer can be seen signalling the biker to a halt after which he proceeded to quiz him on where he was coming from. He then urged the biker to give him money.
The policeman said: “What did you bring for us? Don’t tell me that […that you don’t have anything].”
He insisted on extracting money from him, even if it means receiving it in a foreign currency.
In his response, the Spaniard who shot the video said: “I’m coming from Spain; I crossed to Nigeria today. I don’t have anything yet. I didn’t change some money. When I get to Lagos, I’ll withdraw money with my credit card.
“I don’t have cash. I’m coming from Benin. My family is in Spain. I just transit. I go to Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, all the way to South Africa. I transit along Africa. I do informatics, computer. I deal with computers. I have to go.”
This video was earlier intercepted via other SM platform and investigation already initiated, please. #NoToImpunity

The development has since prompted conversation and elicited mixed reactions on Twitter.
“Nobody wishes to join the police force, especially the other rank cadre. Hence, the force ends up recruiting people who saw the police job as their LAST bus stop. So we need to reengineer the recruitment process,” one person wrote.
“Second, their pay needs to be reviewed, plus disciplinary measures strengthened and better enforced. Following these steps, we can start looking forward to a better police force. But for now. It is the wild west!”
Another Twitter user added: “It’s so simple to investigate videos like this & instantly dismiss all the police at the checkpoint. Then put a new team there & train them with the warning, you mess up, you are fired.
“But then again these guys deliver to whoever put them there so the rot is all the way to the top.”

Very shameless folks. Someone comes into the country and the first thing you ask for isn't his identity but for money. 😡

Nigeria police reform is a necessity for our development. Sadly, they didn't ask for his passport, his means of entrance and couldn't even protect our pride in the eyes of a foreigner.

Nope.Tipping is a seen as a ticket out of unnecessary harassment. cos if these people mean you, they will frustrate the very essence of your being!

My point exactly is that the Police supposed get small shame especially when putting on the uniform. There should be dignity in our services to our country. It's an HONOUR to be putting it on should be worn with pride. My younger brothers that are in the forces are PROUD of it

Foreigners read up on all things prior to travel. They know what to expect in Africa…mostly, the routes they will ply.

As it is now, the IGP can only be appointed from with the NPF.
Nothing stops you from joining the police and effecting change from within the structure. Hopefully at some point you'd be appointed a DPO, Commissioner, AIG etc, and effect the changes you desire.— Jedi Knight (@AigbokhanEjiehi) April 17, 2021
Someone that should have been taken to the police station for investigation before handing him over to immigration for profiling. They didn't even ask him for any ID, not even his passport to know if he's an illegal immigrant or not. damn
— Gidibwoi (@AdeoluSavage) April 17, 2021
Really, it’s not their business to care about that except they have reasonable suspicion. The Immigration guys would have cleared him for that already. What they’re doing is just harassment.

Small thing them for call am yahooboy
— Uncle Gee (@Oncle_Gee) April 17, 2021
Do your investigations we know it’s already a routine. Go to another checkpoint as we speak now, same thing would be happening. I don’t think anyone is serious about any form of reform in the NPF. Same same
