Tomeka Thiam, wife of Senegalese-American singer Akon, has filed for divorce after nearly three decades of marriage.
TMZ reports that court filings show that Thiam, who married the Grammy-nominated artiste on September 15, 1996, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
The filing comes just four days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary.
The documents reveal that the couple share a 17-year-old daughter, Journey.
Tomeka is requesting joint legal custody but wants sole physical custody of the teenager, with visitation rights granted to the ‘Smack That’ singer.
She is also seeking spousal support and has asked the court to block the possibility of Akon receiving any from her.
The 52-year-old musician, whose real name is Aliaune Badara Thiam, has been publicly open about his belief in polygamy.
In a 2022 interview on The Zeze Mills Show, Akon confirmed he is the father of nine children.
While reports and allegations from women linked to him, including Rozina Negusei, Amirror, and Tricia Ann Thiam, suggest he has multiple wives.
Last year, Amirror revealed that their paths crossed in 2012 through a mutual producer while working on music projects and singles.
She described the encounter as the start of a meaningful connection.
She said Akon signed her to his record label Konvict Kulture in 2018.
Amirror said joining the label marked the beginning of their professional collaboration.
