Time, a top American weekly news magazine, has listed ‘Celia’, Tiwa Savage’s latest album, among the ’10 Best Albums of 2020′.
The 13-track project, which was released in August under Motown Records, was described as an album “characterized by an infectious buoyancy”.
The magazine also described the Afropop queen as a singer who has an “innate understanding of how various strains of music from the Black diaspora fit together”.
“So R&B, rap, Afrobeats, and global pop coalesce seamlessly on the record. Savage’s featherweight and precise voice flips fluidly between English and Yoruba, while bright horn sections drift in and out,” it added.
Other notable albums on the list include ‘Folklore’ by Taylor Swift, ‘Ungodly Hour’ by Chloe and Halle, ‘Fetch the Bolt Cutters’ by Fiona Apple and ‘Eternal Atake by Lil Uzi Vert.
‘Celia’ featured several music stars like Davido, Sam Smith, Stefflon Don, Hamzaa and Dice Ailes.
Among songs on the album include ‘Save My Life’, ‘Temptation’, ‘Pakalamisi’, ‘Koroba’, ‘Bombay’, ‘Dangerous Love‘, ‘Park Well’, ‘FWMM’, ‘Ole’, ‘Us’, ‘Attention’, ‘Glory’, and ‘Celia’s Song’.
Reacting to the recognition, the award-winning singer took to her Twitter page on Friday to express her gratitude.
“I doubted many things but one thing I knew for sure was what a beautiful body of work myself and everyone involved created. We created magic. Luke 4 16-30 ‘Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honour’,” she wrote.
“So many projects dropped this year all over the world and Time magazine picked Celia as one of their top 10 albums released this year. Ope ni fun Eledumare. I’m even more gingered to drop my next project, following my heart once again 2021, I’m ready for you.”
