The Weeknd, a Canadian singer and songwriter, on Sunday night left fans surprised when he appeared at the American Music Awards (AMA) 2020 with a bandaged face.
The 30-year-old singer, born Abel Tesfaye, who was one of the biggest winners, took to the stage to accept the multiple awards with his head, jaw, and nose completely bandaged and in bruises.
He had worn a similar make-up at the MTV Video Music Awards in August when he appeared with a bloodied face.
The singer has been moving around wearing his bloodied looks to promote the message in ‘Blinding lights‘ — one of his songs — where he warned people about the dangers of drunk driving and the injuries that can result from indulging in it.
In an interview with Esquire in August, he had explained that ‘Blinding Lights’ “is about how you want to see someone at night, and you’re intoxicated, and you’re driving to this person and you’re just blinded by streetlights, but nothing could stop you from trying to go see that person, because you’re so lonely. I don’t want to ever promote drunk driving, but that’s what the dark undertone is.”
Speaking at Sunday event, the Weeknd dedicated his award to Prince Nelson, an American singer, who died in April 2016, while recalling how his last award was presented to him by the deceased.
“Last time I received this award, it was given to me by the late great Prince, and you know, he’s the reason I get to constantly challenge the genre of R&B, and I’d like to dedicate this award to him. Thank you,” he said.
