The north-central state has experienced renewed attacks by gunmen, with reports of killings occurring almost weekly.

On June 14, over 100 people were killed in attacks by suspected herdsmen in Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma LGA of the state.

The death toll from the killings reportedly climbed to 200 on Sunday, triggering nationwide outrage.

“Over 200 senselessly slain and burnt alive in Benue, and this is not even getting close to enough attention. Why are we so wicked to ourselves?,” rapper Falz wrote.

Content creator Crazeclown also added: “Benue bleeds. Whole families wiped out and thrown into mourning. How many more must die before we name this what it is — a bloody massacre? This is not about politics or tribe, this is life and death. Enough is enough.”

“The killings in Benue cannot keep being met with silence. These are lives lost, families broken, and futures stolen. Nigeria, how many more? This is a national emergency that we all must partake in,” Oxlade wrote.
