Tems, the Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer, has clapped back at a critic, calling for an end to the unsolicited body scrutiny she has endured for years.
Reacting to a comment about her body physique in an X post, the singer expressed frustration about the “weird” and inappropriate comments made about her, especially her buttocks.
She asserted ownership over her body, adding that she has never hidden it, but does not feel the need to prove anything about it.
Tems also called out the double standard of people demanding to see her body while not being open to the same scrutiny themselves.
“Okay, 7 years in. It’s time to pack it up. I never thought I’d need to say it, but you are all weird. ‘It’s small, it’s flat, it’s fat.’ Dog, it’s mine. ‘Show us your bumbum’ lol so me too I will turn and say ‘see’. Nah, show me yours first?” she wrote.
“See how that feels? It’s just a body, I will add and lose weight. I never once hid my body; I just didn’t feel the need to prove or disprove anyone. The more you don’t like my body, the better for me, actually. But it’s enough now. Move on from my bum.”
Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, started to gain popularity in 2020, courtesy of her collaboration with Wizkid on the song ‘Essence’.
In 2023, she earned her first Grammy for her contribution to ‘Wait For U’, the 2022 hit song by Future featuring Drake.
Tems clinched her second at the 2025 Grammy Awards for the ‘Best African Performance’ category.
