The police in Lagos have detained a school teacher over the alleged rape of a 16-year-old student.
The Domestic & Sexual Violence Response Agency (DSVA) confirmed the development in a statement on Saturday.
It said the teacher, who coaches the student after school, was said to have had sex with the victim in February 2022.
The agency said the joint task force implementing the Lagos state child protection policy had visited the school.
This led to the arrest and arraignment of the accused before the Yaba magistrate court 2 on June 1.
“It was alleged that the survivor was introduced to the defendant in 2021 to be coached during lessons after school hours,” DSVA said.
“The after-school lessons on the school premises were cancelled and the defendant moved the venue for the lessons to his relative’s home.
“It was alleged that on the 17th of February 2021, the defendant forcefully had carnal knowledge of the survivor.
“This came to light when The Joint Task Force Taskforce saddled with the implementation of the Lagos state safeguarding and child protection policy visited the school.”
It is understood that the directorate of public prosecutions (DPP) has requested the duplicate case file for perusal.
“DSVA uses this medium to reiterate the state government’s zero-tolerance of all forms of child abuse,” the agency added.
