A chief magistrates’ court sitting in Jos, Plateau state, on Tuesday, sentenced a 24-year-old student to six months in prison for stealing a gas cylinder.
According to NAN, the student simply identified as Ayobami Analowo was handed the sentence by Shawomi Bokkos, the judge, after pleading guilty to the crime.
Bokkos, in his verdict, also ruled that the sentence came with the option of a fine of N20,000.
The judge said he hoped that other people learn from Analowo’s case, adding that his punishment “would serve as a deterrent to other would-be offenders”.
Ibrahim Gokwat, the prosecution counsel, had earlier informed the court that the incident was formally reported by Abraham Godwin, the complainant.
Godwin filed the report for his missing cylinder on March 2 at the A police station in Jos, Plateau state.
Gokwat also said the convict had unlawfully entered Godwin’s house and made away with the gas cylinder.
The stolen gas cylinder was found in Analowo’s possession during the course of the police investigation, leading to his arrest and subsequent trial.
The prosecution also argued that the convict’s actions constituted a breach of the Plateau State Penal Code Law, under which the offense is punishable.
