Selena Gomez, the US singer and actress, has revealed that she won’t be able to give birth due to medical complications.

Speaking to Vanity Fair in a cover story published on Monday, Gomez reflected on how her medical issues have prevented her from being able to safely get pregnant.

The actress said she still plans on becoming a mom one day, adding that “it’s just not going to happen necessarily the way I envisioned it”.

“I haven’t ever said this. But I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she said.

“I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone.”

Gomez, who seeks to start a family with boyfriend Benny Blanco in the future, said she is however open to surrogacy and adoption.

“I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she said.

“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

In June, Gomez said she plans to adopt children if she is still single at age 35.

The 32-year-old singer has battled some health challenges in the past.

She previously opened up about her diagnosis of lupus, an incurable autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal tissue.

Gomez also revealed that she had undergone a kidney transplant in 2017.
