American actress and singer Selena Gomez has recounted her experience while undergoing a kidney transplant.

In an emotional interview on NBC News, the actress talked about the process of getting the transplant. She was flanked by her best friend and kidney donor, Francia Raisa, during the interview.

“I had arthritis, my kidneys were shutting down. My mentality was to keep going”, the actress said amid sobs.

The ‘It Aint Me’ singer said she wouldn’t be alive were it not for Raisa.

“She lived with me in this interesting time when my kidneys were just done. And I didn’t want to ask a single person in my life. The thought of asking someone to do that was really difficult for me,” she said.

“She volunteered and did it. Let alone someone wanting to volunteer, it is incredibly difficult to find a match. The fact that she was a match was unbelievable.”

The surgery, she said, was successful but then things took a turn for the worse.

“I remember waking up two hours after. And I saw my mom and stepdad, I felt okay and really good. I went back to my room and I started to attempt to fall asleep, and in the middle of that process, I started hyperventilating and there was so much pain,” Gomez recounted.

Following the alarm, doctors said she had to go back into surgery as the new kidney was turning around inside her.

“It was a six hour surgery that they had to do on me and the normal kidney process takes about two hours. Apparently one of the arteries had flipped,” she said.

Gomez said she is now healthy and that her blood pressure and energy are much better than before.

“I got the point where it was really kind of life or death. As soon as I got the kidney transplant, my arthritis went away. My Lupus is about 3-5 percent chance it would ever come back. My blood pressure is better, my energy, my life has been better,” she said.

The singer said she hopes sharing her experience would help others. “I hope that we can help somebody. I don’t think what we went through was easy, I don’t think it was fun. I hope this inspires people to feel good to know that there is really good people in the world.”

Gomez and The Weeknd on Monday ended their relationship after being together for 10 months.
