A firestorm of criticism has erupted on social media targeting Rolling Stone magazine after it published an article accusing rapper Nicki Minaj of spreading “misleading information” during her speech at the United Nations headquarters.

The controversy began on Tuesday when Minaj, addressing an audience at the UN, spoke out on the issue of religious persecution in Nigeria.

The rapper stated that Christians in the country “are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed”.

Hours later, Rolling Stone released a piece disputing her claims.

The magazine argued that Minaj’s “claims of extremism against Nigerian Christians, like Donald Trump’s, aren’t backed by any data,” and supported its rebuttal by citing an interview from Al Jazeera, a network owned by a Qatari royal family.

The article was met with immediate and fierce backlash, primarily from Nigerians on social media platform X, who accused the publication of “shoddy journalism, downplaying a severe humanitarian crisis, and exhibiting a profound bias in its sourcing”.

“This is proof that even the international media outlets are not beyond compromise. This is terrifying. I’m speechless,” an X user wrote.

“Misleading information and its Nigerians being killed in droves. You lots are despicable horrible pieces of animal dung. Because you don’t like Nicki doesn’t mean you should spit on a country’s live experience. Shame on you,” another X user added.

“Stupid idiots! You can twist narratives all you want about your stupid beefs and music industry.. but twisting narratives when actual life’s are being cut short and families are being ruined by senseless killings? It will not be well with you @RollingStone,” X user @IInem_a wrote.
