The sacking of two corps members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Ebonyi state for refusing to wear trousers given to them by the scheme has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media platforms.
Ngozi Ukwuoma, the state NYSC spokesperson, had on Saturday disclosed how the two corps members were dismissed from the state’s orientation camp.
Ukwuoma said when they were queried for not putting on the stipulated dressing code, they stated that such was “against their faith.”
The incident has since generated lots of conversation on social media platforms where some Nigerians registered their different opinions.
While a segment of users condemned the actions of the two corps members, stating that they should have been conversant with the rules of the scheme beforehand, others set a religious tone to the conversation, arguing if hijabs could be allowed, why not skirts?
“Didn’t they read the terms and conditions of the NYSC before enrolling,” a Twitter user asked.
“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If hijab should be permitted based on faith, their asking should be yielded to based on faith too,” another user said.
Here is what some Nigerians had to say:
Didn’t they read the terms and conditions of the NYSC before enrolling? 🤦🏻♂️

Well if Muslims are allowed to wear hijab which is a solely based on religious beliefs then I see no reason why Christian’s can’t wear skirts during NYSC.
After all some time ago a Muslim pushed for hijab while being called to Bar and it’s a thing today.

Let them wear their skirt biko.
Sebi hijab is allowed.
Let there be religious equality.

Wetin Dey worry this ones?😂
Na una be the first? Don’t bring religion into rules governing a body you must pass through as a Nigerian graduate 🤦🏾♂️— Gift Ejekwu (@Iambraxton) November 10, 2019
Wearing trousers in camp is not a ‘fashion statement/accessory’ , it is to make it easy for you to carry out the required activities. Do you want to be doing morning drills in skirt? Faith doesn’t excuse logical reasoning. Plus it is just for 3 weeks.

You guys should stop bashing those two girls for putting on skirts instead of white shorts or carton color khaki trousers, which is the approved dress code for NYSC corp members. The core of the problem really cannot be blamed on those innocent girls but on the leadership of the NYSC who failed from day one to incorporates the sensitivity of the religions freedom of Nigerians whom the NYSC is designed for. This is an area of religion both the muslims and christians agrees. Muslim women and christian women are not allowed to put on the clothes of the opposite sex and vice versa. Women may wear trousers but unlike how a man could be allowed to put it on, so whenever a woman put on trouser, she is expected to put on a top that at least falls to her kneels level. NYSC should be dynamic and show some innovation by allowing the shirt for women to go to the kneels level to avoid trampling on women’s religious rights as enshrined in our constitution. I salute the courage of these two christian girls for what they did, for standing up for decency despite the corrupt environment we live today and poisonous western influence of women putting on trousers the way men do, which is very un-African. Our mothers never wore trousers like men, but this present generation that has no sense of history always follow the trend without asking questions! Just too bad Let all Muslims in Nigeria come out to support these two christian girls who are being oppressed by the NYSC leadership and the uninformed trend following Nigerian public, for calling for decent dressing in our NYSC camp. – – MKO Momoh (MuhammadKabir Osikhena MOMOH)
Our ancestors wore skirts. Jesus wore skirts. Hypocrisy is our problem. We put so much emphasis on doctrines. Trousers are actually female clothes. Please Google the origin of trousers, it was originally designed for women to be able to work in high wind regions of America. It was only when Zip was invented that men began to wear trousers called pants in the USA. A little research will clear your misconseptions.
Good one,from a genius
Even our Bible told us to respect and abide by the authority of the land. The rules didn’t tell u to bow to other gods. Isn’t it indecent for u to wear skirt n climb or engage in other exercises at d camp?
Some commented that science n technology or modern day trend has made us forgot history, y then do u use phone, own cars n good houses?
This ur outburst of Faith doesn’t make u a faithful child of God but ur relationships with God n ur fellow humans.
These set of people are so conscious of their dressing but are so terrible to live with. They condemn pp that doesn’t dress as them instead ofteaching them with love. They are d ones that know pp that are going to heaven n d ones doomed for hell.
It is well
The two girls have gotten moral rights to their personalities and religious beliefs, Government and it’s citizens should respect that.
A lot of people talking negatively of this girls are finding it hard to come out of their shells, even some prominent religious leaders know its the truth. The girls have taken the bold step, so support them and if u don’t believe in their opinion, leave them to deal with it, to me their opinion is right and God will fight for them, I support them 100%
