Ebiye Victor, Instagram comedian, has provoked argument on social media after he shared a new skit in which he insinuated that 9ice was “secretly happy” that Burna Boy did not win the 2020 Grammys.
The controversial comedian had taken to his social media page on Monday to share a video where he depicted how 9ice would have reacted to Burna Boy’s loss to Angelique Kidjo at this year’s Grammys.
In the video, the comedian can be seen in a car listening to ‘Street Credibility’, a hit track off ‘Gongo Aso’, an album released by 9ice in 2008.
In the lyrics of the song, the talented singer promised to “bring back home a Grammy” — a feat he has been unable to achieve till date.
Ebiye, making an impression of 9ice, then receives a call where he is informed of Burna Boy’s loss and can be seen celebrating after the call while ‘Gongo Aso’, another song off the same 2008 album, can be heard blasting through the speakers.
The skit has, however, stirred a heated debate on social media platforms especially Twitter, where users are registering their differing opinions.
While a number of users appeared furious at the comedian’s lack of respect, others came to the defence of Ebiye, advising critics “not to take things too seriously”.
“Ebiye is funny but that skit ain’t right Shading 9ice and Burna at the same. The message he’s trying to pass across in the skit is that “You’re happy your friend didn’t win” That’s a very bad concept to think of,” a user said.
“9ice is not dead, so don’t doubt him. He’ll bring you Grammy one day,” said a user.
“It’s funny how you’re trolling 9ice but you seem to forget that street credibility and gongo aso, those two tracks are greater than your entire career as a comedian,” another user wrote.
Here is what some Nigerians had to say:
I just watched Ebiye video and even though it’s not that funny yet it’s very relatable. He tackled your hypocrisy and that’s why you all are angry. Forget the fact that he used 9ice as a case study, he was talking to you. Hypocrites 🤡🤡🤡

9ice album Gongo Aso is the one of the best in Nigeria.
The songs never get old… From Kinda life, Street Credibility, Party Rider, Wedding day, Kasal final, Bachelor's life, Photocopy, Ade ori and finally Gongo aso.
The Album was mad.💯✌

Notting Hill Carnival in 2011 and 2012 in the UK, over 25 artists combined, 9ice stole the show on both occasions. 9ice was very very good, just like Dagrin (RIP).
I understand these artists only have a few years to ‘shine.’ But we won’t forget how good they were.

The Disrespect 9ice gets because he said he would win the Grammy is actually sad. Niggas act like he did not drop an Evergreen Song in "Gongo Aso" with an All Hit Album & the Best Collab Ever in "Street Credibility"
— King Nonny 👑 (@Zaddy_nomso) January 28, 2020
Gongo Aso and street credibility by 9ice is evergreen but I don’t think ebiye will ever have an evergreen comedy skit
— Guwop (@Edo_bwoy) January 27, 2020
Gongo Aso by 9ice is evergreen. If you play that song in 2023, we will still dance to it.

Comedian Ebiye ‘s Skit about 9ice bin happy that Burna Boy didn’t win Grammy is not funny.. Why? Must you always drag n condemn people?

Swallow your pride, 19-1 = o kan hating ni..

Ebiye made mockery of 9ice because 9ice said he is going to bring home Grammy.
If 9ice had dropped Gongo aso & tradition album in this era he would have brought home the Grammy by now.
I don’t blame ebiye for mocking 9ice I blame 9ice for wasting natural hit songs.

Those saying this stuff ain't funny obviously didn't get the Part of the Lyrics 9ice said "DON'T DOUBT ME I GO BRING U GRAMMY"🤣#9ice #Ebiye #wizkid #ASUU pic.twitter.com/AqetsoTgEF

See people criticizing 9ice
Just vibe to his part in street credibility and u would know how deep he got vocals.
He should even change his name to Evergreen 9ice#9ice— Agege wa o💎🔥🐉 (@TushAgegeboy) January 28, 2020
Some of you that promised your parents first class during your first year in school but later graduated with third class are also here dragging 9ice. pic.twitter.com/n95Urqtmkw

But that Ebiye skit on 9ice isn't bad na. It is a joke. Simple. But some of you can't see things in isolation once you don't like someone.

9ice wey go don go reason one Alfa make burna boy no win. 😁
— Folarin Fehintola (@Flamingfolaring) January 27, 2020
9ice you’re joking about built a brand that has lasted long, but you a failed comedian, sexist idiot and all round never do well want to throw jokes? Are you mad? 😂
— Bisi 🥂 (@SisiBisi_) January 27, 2020
At least he gave us a sit at the nomination table, but u see that guy called 9ice, He cant just goan marry and forget to address Nigerians, In fact if he was selected during casting to be a waiter or usher at the Grammy event centre I would have say okay, baba was even close.

Lmao. After laughing to Ebiye’s video about 9ice at the Grammys, you’ll come on twitter and start forming one stupid Wokeness.
Pele o, Mr & mrs know it all.— Rere Ayodele 👑 (@rereayodele) January 28, 2020
Even mentioning 2face and 9ice in the same breadth is any insult to 2face. He is far ahead.
Then Psquare and Dbanj are just that “notch” higher than 9ice.
— Mikail Mekhaill (@Just_Mekhaill) January 28, 2020
Is ebiye a comedian or a noise maker ?
The noise called joke by ebiye is just too dry,he just want to make jest of 9ice with that dry joke.
When Burna stop being rave of the moment his songs fade off with him while 9ice songs will forever be natural evergreen.
