‘Moonlight’ was named winner of the best picture category at the 89th Oscar awards after musical ‘La La Land’ had been mistakenly announced.

The cast of La La Land was already onstage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, US, when it was revealed that the award belonged to Moonlight.

Faye Dunaway and her co-presenter Warren Beatty had announced La La Land as the winner after going through the normal routine of studying the content of the envelope.

It turned out that the pair were given the envelope containing the winner of the best actress role Emma Stone, which had already been announced.

La La Land’s producers were already knee-deep in their acceptance speeches before being interrupted.

Damien Chazelle directed La La Land while Barry Jenkins created Moonlight.

La La Land came into the Oscars with a record-tying 14 nominations.

Other nominees for best picture were:

“Hacksaw Ridge”

“Hell or High Water”

“Hidden Figures”

“Manchester by the Sea”
