Vernon Winfrey, the father of media entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey, has died aged 88.
Winfrey, while announcing the development, said her father took his last breath on Friday.
She said the 88-year-old died while “family surrounded his bedside”.
Winfrey did not disclose the cause of his death.
She however said he “could no longer speak” before he passed on.
“Less than a week ago we honored my father in his own backyard. My friend and gospel singer Wintley Phipps saluted him with a song. He felt the love and reveled in it until he could no longer speak,” Winfrey wrote.
“Yesterday with family surrounding his bedside, I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life, take his last breath. We could feel peace enter the room at his passing.
“That Peace still abides. All is well. Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts.”
Vernon, before his death, was a businessman and ran a barber shop.
The deceased was born in Greenville, Mississippi in the United States on August 21, 1933.
