Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, has become the subject of conversation on social media over a video of his handshake with Pete Edochie, the ace actor.
In the now-viral video, Edochie and Kanayo O Kanayo had arrived at the venue of Elizabeth Jack Rich’s 40th birthday party and walked towards the Yoruba monarch’s table to exchange pleasantries with him.
The actors gave the traditional ruler the popular Igbo backhand handshakes which the Ooni accepted; with smiles etched on their faces.
Kanayo shared the video on Instagram with the caption: “Last night was awesome @peteedochie @babarex0 @chidimokeme and the very outstanding His Royal Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Enitan, Ooni of Ife.”
The video has triggered a wave of mixed reactions on social media platforms.
While some users argued that it was disrespectful for the actors to shake the Ooni’s hand, others blamed the monarch for accepting to exchange pleasantries with them in such a manner.
A segment of users also saw nothing wrong with the way they exchanged greetings.
“People just like wahala, it’s a public gathering and you want Pete to bow down in a place like that? Ooni self no complain, what’s the fuss about?” a user asked.
“How did you expect the Ooni to be greeted in this setting? Some of you are funny. Two mature men quickly understood the settings, their different cultures and still were able to do the greetings very respectfully and agreeably. What else should they have done?” another user asked.
Here are what some Nigerians had to say:
I see people having seizures because Pete Edochie shook hands with Ooni of Ife instead of bowing. Let me shed some light. Pete Edochie holds one of the highest traditional titles in Igbo land.
A titled Igbo man must never bend his knee to any other apart from his Chi .Advertisement— Dr Penking™🇳🇬🇦🇺 (@drpenking) May 25, 2023
There is absolutely nothing wrong in this video. Two people from two different cultures.
You done expect Chief Peter Edochie to prostrate for the Ooni. If both of them are Yoruba now, that’s a different case.

Are we sure that Ooni do not have Igbo blood running in his veins?
Imagine him being Igbonized here greeting Igbo chiefs in Igbo style in what apparently looks like a Yoruba function.
Ooni is truly detribalised! pic.twitter.com/xcbxaAq552

If Ooni wants EVERYBODY to bow for him then he should stay in his palace or be very selective about the type of events he attends.
You can’t be attending parties & public socialite events upandan then expect everyone to bow once they see you, even if they’re OZOR Pete Edochie.

Our Ancestors never bowed for ARUSI no matter how powerful the ARUSI might be……They either sit or stand before ARUSI…….And you want A whole Peter Edochie that belongs to Ozo cult in Igbo culture to bow before your Ooni…..

Now, if I go into the Ooni’s Palace, our tradition allows me to choose to kneel in greeting or not.
I will kneel in greeting, because I am IN HIS HOUSE and I am his guest and therefore at his “mercy” in that instance.
It’s respect and courtesy.
Outside? I will not bow or kneel

Pete Edochie bow for Ooni?
Ooni will experience the highest discomfort he’s ever felt in his life.
There are things that are impossible and a character like Pete bowing to Ooni on a neutral turf is insane and impossible at the same time. pic.twitter.com/Y06BC3szUC
