The Edo state government has ordered an investigation into the rape and murder of a recent graduate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
Adekolore Idowu Glory, a 22-year-old recent graduate of UNIBEN, was earlier reported to have been raped and murdered.
The victim was said to have been brutally beaten before she was raped to death at Iyowa Community in Benin City on June 13.
A man who identified as a brother to the deceased said unknown men attacked her while she was on her way back home from UNIBEN.
Glory, who only graduated last April, was said to have been processing her clearance when she was killed and left close to her house.
NAN reports that Chris Nehikhare, Edo state’s communications commissioner, expressed shock and sadness over the incident.
He said Godwin Obaseki, the state governor, has ordered an investigation and a manhunt for Glory’s killers.
“Gov. Godwin Obaseki has ordered the commissioner of police, Funso Adegboye, to fish out the perpetrators of the evil act within the next seven days,” he said.
Glory’s death is the latest in a handful of tragedies that have hit Nigeria’s campuses in recent weeks.
Earlier, a 500-level student of agronomy at the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo was found dead.
The corpse of the final-year student, identified as Ayandare Modupe, was discovered in the Akungba community of Akoko South.
It was reported that Modupe was found hanging beside an off-campus church she attended in a case of suspected suicide.
