Mobilise only ‘authentic graduates’ for NYSC orientation, VCs direct universities

The committee of vice chancellors in Nigeria has instructed universities to only upload the names of “authentic graduates” for the 2016 Batch B service year.

The directive is as a result of the partial mobilisation of youth corp members by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) due to financial constraints.

Management of the NYSC had recently ordered universities to mobilise only 33% of their fresh graduates for the 2016 Batch B service year.

After its meeting with the director general of NYSC, the committee of vice chancellors released a directive urging institutions not to include graduates of part-time programmes and over-aged graduates in their mobilisation list.

“Both parties acknowledge the overall immediate and long term implications and potential charges of partial mobilisation on the Nigerian Tertiary education system, the graduates and the nation at large does not deserve any youth restiveness at this point in time and hence any decision that may precipitate imminent crises should be avoided”, said the circular issued after the meeting.

“All authentic graduates of universities be uploaded by the universities for the NYSC to mobilise as appropriate. All institutions are enjoined to comply immediately and also ensure that graduates of part-time programmes and over aged graduates are NOT included in their list”, it added.

While urging the federal government and the national assembly to provide resources needed for full mobilisation, the vice chancellors said it’s time to undertake a rethink of the future of the NYSC scheme.

The CVC also enjoined graduates and prospective corps members to show understanding to the turn of events and patiently await further directives from the NYSC.
