Kareem Oluwagbemiga Bright and Yuslam Enoch, two Nigerian nurses, have died in a road accident a few weeks after they announced their engagement.
The pair, who were both staff at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Yola in Adamawa state, died in the accident which occurred on the Abuja-Jos highway on Monday.
Adamu Dodo, the hospital’s spokesman, who confirmed their demise in a chat with BBC, disclosed that Kareem’s father also died in the accident.
“They were travelling because of their forthcoming wedding when the sad incident happened,” he said.
In December, Kareem had taken to his Facebook page to announce his engagement to his colleague and lover.
The medical practitioner had also talked about his excitement to begin the next chapter of his life with Yuslam.
“I popped the question and she said Yes!!! I am really glad that I am going to spend the rest of the next chapter of my life with you,” he had written.
Some Nigerians have taken to social media to express shock over their demise.
In a Facebook post, Nurse on Air, a group promoting nurse-related activities, described their death as “a great loss to the nursing community.”
“It’s so sad to hear the passing of a dear colleague, Nurse Kareem Oluwagbemiga, admin of @nursingcouncillecture and his fiancee,” it read.
“They both died after being a victim of an accident on Jos-Abuja road. This is a great loss to the nursing community.
“May the Lord console their family and the whole nursing community.”
