In the last few years, Nollywood began its evolution from a quantity-oriented film industry to the quality home of globally acclaimed movies. The metamorphosis matured into a vital stage in 2023.
Effiong Editi’s ‘The Black Book‘ took the world by storm when the film was released on Netflix in September. The movie became the number-one ranked film on the streaming platform. ‘The Black Book’ also became a hit in countries like the Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Kenya, Martinique, Panama, Poland, Romania and Venezuela.
‘Gangs of Lagos‘ is about a group of friends whose lives revolved around crime and violence since their childhood in the Isale Eko area of Lagos. The widely-watched film was enmeshed in a long-running controversy about its portrayal of the local Eyo masquerade.
Also, following the controversy of 2022, the Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee found a film worthy of representing the country at the 2024 Academy Awards. CJ Obasi’s ‘Mami Wata’ was the movie selected as a contender for the International Feature Film (IFF) category. The film had earlier been selected for the 2023 edition of the Sundance Film Festival.
These brilliant works share the limelight alongside other Nollywood productions in 2023.
