The 2024 edition of BarryFest, an annual event organised to immortalise Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, the late Fuji icon, will take place on February 9.
Ayinde Barrister passed away on December 16, 2010, in the United Kingdom after battling an undisclosed ailment.
The organisers, in a statement, said Lanre Issa Onilu, director general of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), will be the guest speaker at the event in Ibadan, Oyo state.
The organisers said Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, a senator, is the chairman of the day, while Yeye Adunola Oredolapo Adesuyi is the chairlady.
The two-day festival will include the premiere of a documentary in honour of the late musician, gala night, and presentation of awards.
“The NOA’s director general was a close ally of the late musician as well as an authority on the latter’s long musical career, a reason the Barryfest organisers considered him as the guest speaker,” the statement reads.
“Day One of the two-day festival on February 9 will see the convening groups converge at the Muftau Lanihun Mosque, Ibadan for a post-humous prayer for the late musician.
“After which a cenotaph in his honour would be unveiled at a spot on the Lagos-Ilorin express road while Ilaji Hotel and Resort in the Oyo state capital would host a gala later in the day.
“On February 10, the premiere of first episode of a documentary titled ‘Mr Fuji Barry Wonder’ by Professor Saheed Aderinto would be shown.
“Followed by presentation of awards to guests and the day would be wrapped up by a list of Fuji musicians who would entertain the guests.”
Regarded as the pioneer of Fuji and Wéré music, Ayinde was born on February 9, 1948.
After his first break into music in 1965, the musician went on to release over 70 studio albums.
