The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has sparked outrage on social media platforms following their announcement of charges for renewal and replacement of the national ID card.
The commission had on Tuesday taken to its Twitter page to inform Nigerians that those who lost their ID cards would pay N5000 to replace them, while those whose cards expired would pay N3000 for renewal.
“Card Renewal is N3000 while Card Replacement is N5000,” it wrote.
“When your National e-id card expires it cost N3000 payable via Remitta for renewal.”
Card Renewal is N3000 while Card Replacement is N5000

The announcement did not go down well with quite a number of Nigerians and they took to the microblogging platform to express their annoyance and frustrations.
“N5000 to renew National ID card? That means your citizenship as a Nigerian expires after a certain period of time so you have to renew your citizenship with N5000 or else you are no longer Nigerian? Who brought up this foolishness,” a Twitter user said.
“I’ve registered for my national ID for more than 3yrs now and I am yet to get it, now y’all are already talking about renewal of ID 3k & replacement 5k. So lemme me gerrit now if my National ID expires I stop being Nigerian abi? Wawuu! Dear Nigeria leaders,y’all are clowns I swear,” another user said.
Here is what some Nigerians had to say:

If you withdraw money, Gov't will collect money.
If you deposit money, Gov't will collect money.

Una never even give ID card to people that registered since 1900, you are already talking of expiration.
Biko someone should explain why a national ID card should expire. Like after it expires, the person stops being a citizen or what?

I applied for National ID since 2014, I'm yet to receive the permanent National ID up until now.
In fact, I stopped going to NIMC office to ask if my National ID is ready, now, NIMC is asking I pay N5000 for a renewal of an ID I never got.
NIMC is a SCAM!

NIMC Update!!!
National ID (NID) card – N3,000New NID renewal and Replacement – N5,000
Do u know most people still use temporary NID slips? But the agency has the nerve to extort Nigerians even when they haven't done their own job.

Whoever brought up this idea of renewing National ID didn't think it through. Do US citizens renew their Social Security Number?
— Wale Adetona (@iSlimfit) October 15, 2019
Please don't be deceived that the National ID is as useless as whatever you can imagine. The national ID card they want you to renew do not carry your National Indentification Number (NIN) of 11 digits. So why do @nimc_ng want you to renew it?
What a commission. A failed one 😔

I applied for Nigeria National ID in 2015. 4 years 4 months later it is not ready. So I've been wondering what folks who work at National Identity Management Commission have been doing there for the past 4 years & 4 months.
— P.T.R Mbonu (@Broda_Rookie) October 8, 2019
NIMC must really be mad. 3k to renew national ID of which country please?
Now National ID is required for everything including our yeye passport that we pay 35k to renew.
We must really be a joke to this government. #TyrantGovernment pic.twitter.com/xgwlWHA65B— EMIR OF ABUJA 👑 🕊️ (@imoleayomichael) October 15, 2019
Hahaaha funny. But wait o, within the past few month there have been "reasons" to increase in tax, charges on deposits above 500k, communication charges, now National ID by govt agencies but no reason to commence payment of minimum wage. We sha get leaders https://t.co/yFCi5yiSet
— Daniel C. Emeto (@DanielEmeto) October 15, 2019
Wait ooo… So with all the hardship in the land the only way FG could think of boosting its revenue is by collecting 5k for renewal of National ID …ahh! 🙆🏾

— Pied Piper Of Naija (@JohnMarsAuto) October 15, 2019
I applied for my National ID since 2016. All I have till date is the laminated rectangular paper because the real card has never been ready and might never be! Now there’s a charge on renewal? Am I renewing the rectangular paper that doesn’t even fit inside my wallet?
