Burna Boy, the Grammy Award-winning singer, has advised his colleagues against relying solely on revenue from Nigerian streams.

In a post via his Instagram story, the ‘Last Last’ hitmaker cautioned against being swayed by “Twitter polls or social media fans,” noting that Nigerian fans cannot fill a stadium anywhere in the world.

“Dear artists, don’t be fooled by Twitter polls or Nigerian social media fans. They won’t fill a stadium for you anywhere in the world,” he said.

In a subsequent post, Burna Boy argued that having a song reach number one in Nigeria on any streaming platform is not a significant achievement.

He compared the revenue generated from Nigerian streams to those from the UK, US, and Europe, highlighting the significant disparity.

“1,000,000 = $300 to $400. 1,000,000 = £3000 to £4000. 1,000,000 = $3000 to $4000. 1,000,000 = €3000 to €4000. Your song being number 1 in Nigeria is not something to celebrate. Aim higher or do other business on the side. I type with love. #NoSignOfWeakness,” he wrote.

He has also won several awards. In 2021, the Afro-fusion artiste won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards for ‘Twice As Tall’.

In April, the Port Harcourt-born singer made Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people for 2024.
