Peter ‘Mr P’ Okoye has addressed a claim by Nigerian-British rapper Darkoo that he sabotaged her music video, which sampled Psquare’s ‘Gimme Dat’.
The controversy between both parties started on Saturday after Darkoo alleged that Mr. P facilitated the copyright infringement tag on her video ‘Focus on Me’ on YouTube after she refused to feature him in the song.
The rapper said she had obtained the necessary clearance from Psquare to sample ‘Gimme Dat’ in her song.
She said Psquare was entitled to 50% of the song’s earnings. She, however, alleged that Peter demanded to be featured on the track — a request she initially declined but considered for a possible remix.
Darkoo alleged that Mr. P’s actions were a deliberate attempt to sabotage her work.
Mr. P’s management ONE released a statement denying the sabotage allegations.
In the statement signed by Ayo Oke, the management firm disclosed that Darkoo’s music video was taken down after she failed to obtain clearance from the correct stakeholders in the Psquare catalogue management.
The statement revealed that Darkoo sought clearance from an unauthorised entity, which is no longer in operation, and whose ownership is currently in contention.
It also clarified that the 50% earnings claim was requested by the individual Darkoo initially approached, not Mr. P.
One management argued that Peter’s actions were aimed at “guiding a younger artiste like Darkoo, rather than sabotaging her work”.
The statement concluded that Darkoo’s allegations were an attempt to capitalize on the “supposed Psquare feud for popularity and clout”.
“However, Darkoo and her team had sought to get clearance from an entity, which is unauthorised to represent the music group, P-SQUARE,” the statement reads in part.
“This is not her first rodeo with sampling yet clearance was sought after releasing the song into public domain, then getting clearance from an entity that no longer exists, whose ownership is currently in contention.
“Sadly, Darkoo didn’t ‘rant’ about a disservice or sabotage when the video was taken down, rather she reached out to our client (Mr. P) to salvage the situation but she suddenly found her voice once the video was reinstated on the video-sharing platform, calling him a saboteur.
“As much as we do not want to believe the actions of Darkoo and her team are geared towards sensationalising a professional matter, it is obvious she wants to capitalise on the supposed P-SQUARE feud for popularity, clout and trend by maligning the one person that advised her on doing the right thing from the beginning.
“The only items that were modified in the proper agreement and clearance were:
“The entity (SQUARE Records and not Northside Ent) and including ALL the stakeholders in the duo P-SQUARE.
“On the 50% earnings claim, Mr P management clarified that “it was requested by the individual she approached initially”.
