The seventh edition of the GTCO Fashion Weekend, held in Lagos, brought together designers, creatives, and entrepreneurs for a two-day event.
The event kicked off on Saturday with stunning runway shows where unique collections of Nigerian and international fashion designers were showcased.
The designers included Ninie, May Africa, Elpis Megalio, Jewel Jemila, Ibilola Ogundipe, Lohije, Xu Zhi, and Selly Raby Kane.
The runway remains a cornerstone of the 2024 GTCO Fashion Weekend, presenting a meticulously curated collection of daring and captivating fashion statements from Africa’s most esteemed brands.
Saturday’s masterclass was led by Lulu Kennedy, a fashion editor, and Patrick Bright, a fashion influencer.
The pair shared valuable insights into the fashion and influencing industries, offering practical advice to aspiring designers and entrepreneurs.
Kennedy expressed willingness to partner with young Nigerian designers but cited funding as a challenge.
“With the right partners and the right kind of strategy, why not? We’re open to stuff like collaborations,” she said.
“It is not something we have done before, and I feel there are a lot of logistical problems. I do not have the funding to do that, but maybe we can ask GTCO for a partnership.”
Sunday’s masterclass featured celebrity hairdresser Ted Gibson and makeup artist Sheila Daley. The session included a live demonstration where the experts showcased techniques for achieving flawless hair and makeup.
Daley talked about how Nigeria’s diverse skin tones inspired her to create a brand catering specifically to them.
“I see myself working with Nigerians because my goal is to come to Nigeria. I have been driving through the streets and just looking at all the different tones and complexion and it is so beautiful,” she said.
“I think everybody here is so amazing. I would like to touch them, feel them, and also to create something specifically for them. Not a brand that is looking to extend but something specifically for Nigerians.”
Other major takeaways from the event include the streetwear showcases, sales, shopping opportunities, and exhibitions. There were also networking events for fashion professionals and entrepreneurs
Segun Agbaje, the group CEO of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, earlier said: “GTCO Fashion Weekend is a deliberate effort to uplift, empower, and celebrate African talents. Innovation and inclusivity drive an industry reflecting the diversity and richness of African talent.”
