Asake says he sings in Yoruba because music transcends language barriers.
The singer, in a chat with ABC News, said the lyrics to music sometimes don’t need to be understood.
Asake sings predominantly in Yoruba and Pidgin, blending Fuji and Amapiano to achieve his style of Afrofusion.
Asked why he retains Yoruba as the language of his songwriting, Asake said music is all about feeling to him.
“Yoruba is so important to me and there are a lot of people that understand it,” the singer said.
“And to me, the way I understand music is like it’s a feeling. Sometimes you don’t even need to understand it.”
Asake discussed the importance of connecting with the audience during his live performances.
He said he tries to create a better experience for fans than they would be exposed to while streaming his songs.
“Everybody is there for the same reason, to feel good music,” the singer added.
“You know, they have a connection so they do what they have to do by jumping and screaming Asake.
“I have to do what I have to do and make sure they even enjoy the song more than what they are listening to on Apple Music.”
Asake was signed to the Olamide-owned label YBNL in February 2022, releasing ‘Ololade’, his debut EP.
He announced his UK tour and subsequently sold out the O2 Brixton in London after five minutes.
