Reekado Banks has opened up about his decision to leave Mavin Records in 2018, calling the move “premature” and a result of his youthful naivety.

Born Ayoleyi Hanniel Solomon, the artiste chose not to renew his contract with Don Jazzy’s famed label after a five-year stint, believing he was ready to launch a new chapter as an independent singer.

However, his career experienced an inconsistent trajectory following his departure, with periods of lower musical output as he explored other business ventures.

Speaking on the Echoroom podcast, the singer admitted that he underestimated the challenges of navigating the industry alone.

“It was not a conflict situation. I was pretty young and pretty fixated on what I wanted to do. I wanted to leave. Anyways, my contact had ended two years prior,” he said.

“I signed a three-year contract. I allowed it to ride for another two years. I was there for five years and not renewing the contract.

“So, when it was time, I thought I wanted to do this now. I thought I could do it now. I just embarked on the journey.”

The singer acknowledged the widespread view that his departure was too hasty.

“As many people would view it. As many people would view it as premature. As soon as I jumped into the sea I realised how premature it is,” he added.

Last month, the 31-year-old songwriter revealed that staying longer at Mavin Records might have made him “feel too entitled”.
