Ladin Cima, Kannywood actress, has come under fire for claiming filmmakers usually pay her between N2,000 to N5,000 for movie roles.
In a recent interview with BBC Hausa, the actress, who is popular for playing motherly roles in Hausa movies, had lamented the paltry sum given to her by some producers.
“Since I started acting, I have not been paid anything tangible. Sometimes, I get N5,000 or less. Today for instance, I went to act movie and what I got was just N2,000,” she said.
“It is from that same amount of money that I usually feed eight people who depend on me for food.”
The Katsina-born actress also narrated how she almost became homeless after being told to vacate her apartment.
“I was formerly a civil servant. I worked as a staff of Nasarawa hospital and after I retired, I had to leave the quarters for them. So, that experience almost made me homeless,” she added.
“The reason is because the money that I usually make from acting is too small for me to save to build a house. How do I save from N2,000 to build a house?”
Her comment has continued to elicit intense reactions in Kannywood as a number of Hausa filmmakers faulted her claim.
Ali Nuhu, the actor and filmmaker, said it was wrong for Ladin to generalise her claim, arguing that not all Kannywood producers treat her poorly.
“What she said was wrong because not every producer is like that. In my own case for instance, she featured in one of my movies recently and I paid N40,000 for her services,” he said.
“Some people have started abusing me as a result of the interview due to the fact that she featured in my movie recently.”
On his part, Falalu Dorayi said he was surprised at Ladin’s remark because both of them had worked together in several movies.
Dorayi said he never paid her less than N20,000 during the period they worked together.
“She (Ladin) acted in one of my movies less than 10 days ago and what I gave her was N30,000. So, what she said surprised me,” he said.
“Even in my series where she acted five scenes, I gave her N40,000. Also, when she had accomodation issue, Kannywood stars contributed almost one million naira for her.”
In her reaction to what Nuhu and Dorayi had said, Ladin admitted that there are some producers who treat her very well.
“Producers like Nuhu used to visit my house to give me money. I’m not disputing that. More recently, Hadiza Gabon, another Kannywood actress, gave me N300,000. Many of them also donated to buy a house for me,” she said.
