Guinness World Records (GWR) has officially crowned New York-based advocate and content creator Jessica ‘Jess’ Martinez as the holder of the largest Afro title.
In a recent blog post, the GWR disclosed that the new record celebrates a remarkable head of natural hair that measures 29 cm (11.4 in) in height, 31 cm (12.2 in) in width, and an impressive 190 cm (74.8 in) in circumference.
Martinez also announced her achievement in an Instagram post, framing the record not just as a personal victory, but as a landmark for self-acceptance and the beauty of natural hair.
For Martinez, her Afro is more than just hair; it’s a powerful statement.
She also expressed her hope that the record will “inspire others to feel comfortable wearing natural hair in professional settings, break past stereotypes, and end hair discrimination worldwide”.
“I’m honored to announce that I have broken a @guinnessworldrecords title for Worlds Largest Afro on female living person. I am beyond grateful to receive this recognition for my big beautiful hair,” she wrote.
“It’s a symbol of my dedication and commitment to be my authentic self no matter what! I hope to inspire others to feel comfortable wearing natural hair in professional settings, break past stereotypes, and end hair discrimination worldwide.
“Thank you for everyone who has supported me on this journey! This is a reminder to never give up on your dreams! I thank God for His GRACE over my life! To walking by faith and not by sight! Stay blessed, not stress!”

The new record marks the end of a 15-year reign held by Aevin Dugas of Louisiana. Dugas first claimed the title in 2010 and went on to break her own record in 2021 and 2022, with her hair previously measuring 25 cm tall and 165 cm in circumference.
Martinez now officially succeeds her, setting a new global benchmark.
